I coach a High School rugby team and one of my players got suspended for this today... Completely ridiculous! by Scurvy-Jonesin news

Also consider that those kids would probably all be driving cars! Maybe not the same route, but that's still a significant reduction in traffic which would probably cancel out a decent portion of that delay.

Advanced Writing in the Disciplines by jacquelinesarahin NEU

[–]thegrubixcube 0 points1 point ago

I took it last summer with Greg Cass (Ph.D. student teacher) and he was awesome. Most people I've talked to have had similar experiences with graduate students as teachers. It was an honors section so the class itself wasn't geared towards one major specifically, but we did have to focus our writing to a target audience within our major.

We had to complete 4 major assignments in the Summer II semester which translates to roughly one every week and a half, sometimes more often. My final portfolio was roughly 40 pages (probably 20 full pages of writing) so that will give you some impression of the amount of work required.

This was my first English class since high school since I AP'd out of Freshman writing, but I think my writing improved greatly. A lot of people think it's a waste of time, but writing is something I think most people can improve on.

Also, we didn't use the advanced writing textbook too much. We only needed a few chapters so I just bought a copy, scanned in what I needed at the library, then returned it. I also have a digital copy of the advanced writing toolkit if you need it.

For you crossword fans, a Simpsons themed puzzle by Brendan Emmett Quigley by thegrubixcubein TheSimpsons

Oh no problem! Sorry to give away a couple clues there! If you have an Android phone, a great app is Shortyz. But if you're going to work on the ones in the paper, they generally get harder as the week goes on, so don't get discouraged by a Friday or Saturday puzzle!

Hahaha no you're not! I assume that you just don't do many crosswords, and that's ok. Crosswords are about 90% practice and 10% random knowledge/luck. So if you're interested, here's a quick guide to how to solve crosswords:

  1. Look at the title of the puzzle. In this case, the title is Neologisms Coined on The Simpsons. This title indicates the theme of the puzzle and usually applies to the longest clues or in this case, those indicated by an asterisk. Now I didn't know what a Neologism was when I started this puzzle, but from Latin, we can see that it is based off of the root 'logos' which means it has to do with language or words. So basically in this puzzle we can determine that we're looking for words or phrases coined by The Simpsons. It actually means a newly coined word or phrase, but this rough approximation is really enough.

  2. Know the rules. There are basic rules that govern crossword puzzles. If a clue is given as a plural, e.g. 9. Across: Downtimes, we know that the answer in the puzzle will be plural. Same goes for tenses - past tense clues will give past tense answers. Similarly, if a clue is abbreviated, the answer will usually be abbreviated (but not always - there are some exceptions). Finally, clues with a question mark indicated that the answer is a play on words (for instance, if the clue was Maiden's last words? The answer could be I DO.) There are some more listed here, but those are the major ones to start.

  3. Work in blocks. Everyone has their own style, but I like to work in little blocks. Use words you're pretty sure on to help you solve other clues. So for this puzzle just look around until you find a clue that you're confident you know the answer to. In this case I saw 20 Across: Arcade Currency and I knew that the answer was almost definitely TOKENS. From there you can work your way through that top left corner.

  4. Identify the themed clues. So in this case, the themed clues are marked by asterisks. So let's take a look. The first is 17 Across: *Fine, acceptable. So since we know the theme of the puzzle is Neologisms Coined on The Simpsons, we know to look for a Simpsons term that means fine/acceptable. Now, if you're a Simpsons buff, you might know it off the bat, or it might take a few Down clues to give you a start. Either way, you can eventually figure out that the answer to the clue is CROMULENT. Same process applies to 24, 39, and 53 Across and 62 Down.

  5. Know common words. This really just comes with practice, but there are common words that are in nearly every crossword. Some that come to mind are: OREO, ASP (snake), IRE, ERE, IRK, OGLE, and AORTA. There are hundreds more that you pick up eventually.

Hope this helps! I find crosswords to be really clever and enjoyable, and I regularly laugh out loud playing them. Like I said, it just takes a little practice.

Even if you can't do/hate crosswords, I bet you all can get the theme clues.

Did it in West F and West G. No problems - just towel the door, open a window and blow the smoke towards a fan. Make sure to hide it well during room checks, and just in general because it is a fire code violation.

Yeah, the small guys are the best. You get to actually have a conversation and not get burried under thousands of comments. I've already unsubscribed from most of the defaults. Advice animals went quickly, and every day I'm closer and closer to dropping pics, WTF, and funny.

The content is still there, you just have to go to smaller subreddits to find it. Check out /r/TrueReddit, /r/DepthHub, /r/offbeat for "traditional reddit".

I don't think anyone would demand proof to a post on this subreddit.
