What is one movie that you hate, but everyone else seems to love? by jonscotchin AskReddit

I liked it, but I swear to god, if Dent said "WHERE'S RACHEL" or "WHAT ABOUT RACHEL" one more time...

Yep. Killed a computer from playing DF too much. I mean, probably not, but I never had a problem before DF, and now it overheats far too easily, and shuts down when it does overheat.

Well, you should probably run D3 on your laptop. Wouldn't want to tax it too much.

I really like the sequence of pictures, because it feels like you're coming in from the snow to a classy establishment. I even heard classical music in my head when I saw the fireplace and couch, haha. Nice work.

If you were falsely accused of being a serial murderer, what odd features and weird quirks about yourself would presume you guilty. by Harrybobin AskReddit

I tend to stare. I can't help it, people-watching can be interesting. Just watching the body language that people have, trying to guess how each person feels about the situation without actually hearing conversation...

Yeah. I turn red as a motherfucker whenever I get caught in situations like that, even when I'm not lying. I never used to turn red either, it's really bad and I hate it.

What the fuck that was a lot of bullshit words.

I suspect that Pitchfork is actually the product of some CS majors who wrote a program that strings together self-important statements, obscure references for the sake of being obscure, and then peppers in annoyingly complex words for the hell of it.

People always seem to have roommate horror stories, and I figured that redditors must be behind some of them. What is something you've done as a roommate that you now realize was a really dick move? by justwonderingbroin AskReddit

Are... are you my old roommate?

I mean, right down to the whole same three albums thing even.

Also, same here where things got a lot better when I moved out. I dunno, he's still sad, but he's a cool guy.

Redditors that saw the moon landing: Did you believe it would (for now) stop there? Are you disappointed? and what were the sentiments of the time? by MAH-TEEin AskReddit

[–]slavetoinsurance 6 points7 points ago

I don't think, even with commercial spaceflight, that we'll ever lose that sense of exploration and wonder that we saw the space race with. There will always be somewhere new to go and see, and there will always be boundaries that brave people are willing to test and bend. We'll still be humans, finding new and ingenious ways to expand our knowledge and experiences.

If it's any consolation, the realm of commercial spaceflight right now is relegated to mundane spaceflight, like LEO and GSO. NASA is still developing a heavy-lift rocket, still plans on exploring NEOs and "deep" space, and still plans to be the standard-bearer (along with other international spaceflight organizations) of human progress and achievement.

We've experienced a lot of disappointment, yes. I feel, though, that it was because we went up there without a plan of what we were to do afterwards, and with much less knowledge than we really should have had to attempt something like that. We're just now building the foundation to be sturdy enough to attempt things like going to the moon again, and do it to stay.

System of a Down saved my life by rainbowcabbagein fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

I do think they're terrible as well, in terms of technique. However, I can't deny the kind of energy that they put out, how much that translates into the crowd, and how much it just seems like they really love what they're doing. Whereas they may not be that great to listen to from a critical standpoint, they're definitely the most fun I've ever had at a concert. That, to me, counts just as much.

Like, on the other end of the spectrum, I've seen Opeth live, and while I enjoyed the shit out of that too, it was for an entirely different reason. Opeth is comprised of incredibly talented musicians who sound almost flawless live, but they also have a much more reserved atmosphere about them (possibly because what they're playing is so technically challenging), and while still awesome, it felt more like listening to a really loud album recording, rather than being at a live show.

I'm really not that hungry either, so don't worry about being eaten.

Help critiquing a bit of a short sci-fi story? by slavetoinsurancein writing

[–]slavetoinsurance[S] 1 point2 points ago

Wow, thank you for the response. I also had concerns about the dialogue being too constructed, but I haven't really had the time to go over it and make big changes. My intention is to make Simon still awkward and learning at this stage (almost like he's in very late beta testing stages), but I haven't really conveyed that in the writing, at least not yet. At any rate, I admit that Simon saying "how are you today?" was just weirdness on my part, not the character's.

It's true too that I should reword that sentence about his beliefs. I wanted Simon to mean that it's unknown to him on an emotional level, that feeling of thinking there's something more out there, but that isn't really made clear in that sentence.

Also, the issue with "seemed to smile" is that the MC was supposed to be unsure as to whether or not it was a smile. Again, that was probably poorly constructed, though, because it sounds like a redundancy or something like that. And using "atomic" was a last minute decision because I liked the sound of the word, but you bring up a good point that nobody ever really uses it anymore.

As far as the rest of the writing is concerned, I think a lot of that is the remnants of a lot of stylistic issues I still struggle with. When I was in middle and early high school, I would use the passive voice a lot, because I thought that was the mark of a good writer or something (I don't know, I was young; cut me some slack). Hell, it wasn't until I looked it up myself that I learned what active and passive voice meant, and then I saw it everywhere in my writing. So, in that sense, I still can be susceptible to using it, as well as some other things you pointed out which I recognize as being "crutches" that I started to use to avoid passive voice, that aren't necessarily better.

Anyway, thanks a lot for taking the time for all of this, it gives me a lot to think about and refine in my writing. I really do appreciate it.

A tip regarding massive improvement of macro performance by brucemoin dwarffortress

[–]slavetoinsurance 1 point2 points ago

Well, the way I do it is I designate a whole floor, then hit d -> x, ctrl+r to start the macro, and then go through and erase the entire designation and ONLY the designation, starting from one of the central staircases (or at least some easily trackable point).

Then I save it, and whenever I want to use it, I use d -> d to set digging designation, then start the macro. The macro saves all of the key sequences after that, so because I set to dig, it creates the designations, rather than removing them.

I'm at work right now, so it's not really available to me, but I can tell you that it's largely based off of these designs.

Macros have saved me from insanity when designating entire floors with large, repeating designs. In fact, I design my bedrooms now to be tessellated so that I CAN do that.
