How do you break away from civilian life? by HRHPrincein Military

[–]sillyloser 4 points5 points ago

Don't join the military to defeat stereotypes. Only join if you want to serve your country and are prepared to give your life for it.

DC is a very competitive place and everyone there has contacts and connections and is trying to work their way up. There are a lot of young professionals and college grads just like you.

The military is in a drawdown and slots for advancement and specialized training are starting to be hard to come by.

You will have to decide which is more important to you at this time of your life. You will have to be competitive and work your ass off in either environment.

If you do join the military, learn a skill that you can use as a professional when you return to civilian life.

It sounds like you want to prove something to yourself and are worried about missed opportunities. Focus on what you want to do and create your own opportunities.

Each amendment has a certain amount of time alloted to debate so they don't talk for an hour about one addition. The person who introduces the amendment gets time to talk (I think it's 5 mins in this committee) and a person on the opposition gets an equal amount of time. They can yield their time to anyone they like, which means they are giving the floor to someone else during their alloted time to speak.

The committee is being very courteous tonight and yielding their debate time to both their supporters and opposers.

tl;dr ELI5: Each side gets 5 mins to talk. Yield means you allow someone else to use your time to talk.

I flew a flight with him this summer. One of the best flights I've ever had. Really clear skies and saw all the major US cities on the east coast.

He had a few other quips. "Our flight to _____ should take 12 parsecs but if we are not cleared by air traffic control to engage hyperdrive it will take appox 4 hours."

While in flight and running a little late.

"Our handy dandy arrival computer schedules us for a landing at 6:45. Our flight as you know left a little behind schedule. We are going to work with airtraffic control to see if we can cut some time off the flight, but unfortunately the laws of physics only allow us to do so much."

It's cool to see him on video. Thanks OP.

I agree.

I used very active language in what I wrote but I don't believe the story. I think the man Jesus could have existed but we just don't have a way to prove it. I told the story not because I believe it but because I liked the topic of the thread which was about Jesus as an everyday man in the context of culture and time period. I always thought the story of Palm Sunday was never significant enough to equal the celebration given to it in the christian church until I heard the "political" version.

I should have prefaced my original post with "hey here's a cool story or interpretation I heard" or something like that. I assumed that this was a very casual thread since it originated with a screenshot of a facebook status. I did not intend to promote fiction as nonfiction. My bad homie.

Such a simple and effective prank. by Immynimmyin videos

[–]sillyloser 0 points1 point ago

I don't see that as a prank when you're doing it to strangers. It's the equivalent of "hey there's something on your shirt" -> nose flick. It's not that clever and when you do it to your friends they just find it annoying, not something they will look back on later and laugh at. When you do it to a stranger, you're just a dick.

If you want to do pranks to strangers in NYC, do improv everywhere. Everyone goes home with a crazy/funny story, and there's very little chance of being punched in the face for being an ass.

No, I'm not a religious or historical scholar and don't have access to a library with any sources to support it.

I learned this casually through a minister who was a graduate of Harvard Divinity school. I don't know his sources but the story was taught in a historical context rather than a miraculous or religious one.

I did a quick search online and I did find pages talking about this story in reference to Pilates procession vs. Jesus procession on Palm Sunday but it I've only found it so far on peoples personal webpages, not an academic page etc.

There is proof that Pontius Pilate and Herod lived and served but of course no proof of Jesus existence which causes a problem to begin with. And I have no idea if there's any mention in other holy books like the Talmud or Koran although I do know that Jesus is in the Koran.

I'll keep poking around the internet and see if anything academic pops up.

Edit: Found two books on google scholar. I haven't read either.

The first has citations beyond the bible but they only appear to argue Pilates existence and possible proof of his presence in Jerusalem during Passover. It does not discuss the rival processions, and doesn't appear to have any sources concerning Jesus apart from the Bible.

The second book I don't have a full bibliography of but it appears to only source the bible. It does make the arguments I talked about above.

Jesus was killed because he was a political threat.

Rome ruled over Judea and Pontius Pilate was the Governor but Rome allowed the local municipal governments to stay in place. Rome primarily was concerned with keeping military control of the region and collecting taxes. The Sanhedrin/ High Priests were the Jewish leaders and administrators.

Jesus had primarily pissed off the High Priests in most of the New Testament by preaching in the temple, throwing out moneylenders, throwing out doctrine like working on the sabbath and so forth. The High Priests would have been eager to stop him for two reasons. 1. To prevent the Jewish people from listening to him and rebelling and removing them from power. 2. Prevent the Romans from removing them from power for not keeping control over the people and/or attacking the Jewish people in prevention of an uprising.

But here's one way Jesus would have pissed of the Romans. During Passover week, the population of Jerusalem doubled as Jews came into town to celebrate. The Governor, Pontius Pilate, lived in Caesaria, but during passover week would travel to Jerusalem with an army and make a show of force to remind the Jews that they were occupied. As you can imagine, the Roman army would have been a very impressive sight and would have been very intimidating. They entered Jerusalem from the west at the main city gate and would have marched through town to the fortress. Leading the march would have been Pontius Pilate most likely riding a big fucking horse.

On the very same day that Pontius Pilate marched into town, Jesus paraded into Jerusalem from the eastern gate, riding a donkey.

Read that again and see that image in your head. Pontius Pilate, the occupier, on his stallion with his army marching into town from one gate in order to threaten any rebels, and Jesus, a lowly carpenter who spent all of his time with the poor and diseased, parading through the opposite gate on a donkey as the King of the Jews. That's pretty fucking funny and very ballsy.

This was followed by Jesus cleansing the temple and pissing off the High Priests, and later the people turning against him for being a troublemaker. There's a whole lot I'm not writing about that happened during this week and much more needed to understand the historical context as well as why the whole parading on a donkey was so symbolic but an important point to understand is that things were very tense. And that everything that Jesus did was not only religious teaching but also political action. He was at the bottom of the totem pole but his actions were such a threat that Rome, the Jewish government, and the Jewish people all turned against him and killed him.

tl;dr: Jesus had some big ass balls
