IRC client of choice for /r/sysadmin? by DGMavnin sysadmin

irssi and screen make a great combination. If your connection gets cut off or you detach your screen session, your irc connection keeps running and you can log back into screen with: screen -r

When exactly did Firefox become a pile of shit? by Dean403in AskReddit

[–]redbike 0 points1 point ago

I just switched back to firefox after using chrome for a couple of years. I prefer it (firefox) now and have no stability issues, no crashes. I am also using Gnome 3 / latest Ubuntu. Perhaps the problem is that your OS is unstable.

Honestly there are more interesting things to read on wikipedia. Why are people always hating on people with weight problems.

I like the color and design, although the spacing is a bit large for threaded conversations.

How many of you swap the CTRL and the caps-lock key by seansayin emacs

I didn't actually swap them, I just made the caps-lock another ctrl key. Seriously who ever uses caps-lock except by mistake? (Granted my roommate once complained about it when he was working on a Fortran assignment.)

Ah, okay... TritonConnect is ATM monitoring software. How narrow a vision for not including ATM monitoring software in my worldview of necessary software for a desktop user.

A pile of bison skulls, 1870s. A big pile. by washerin wikipedia

This was part of a program to exterminate the indigenous peoples way of life. Specifically the plains tribes. Bison meant everything to plains tribes: it was their food, clothing and shelter. To drive the bison to extinction was definitely an attempt to drive the plains tribes to extinction as well.

How many people on /r/Linux are using Macs? by aw4llyin linux

No, read it again, slower this time.... I'll wait.... What I said is for the average user, someone who uses 1. a browser, 2. an office suite. There is a similar learning curve moving from one OS to another, whether you are moving from Mac to Win7 or WinXP to Ubuntu.

The second part of my post was that unless you are a programmer or sys admin, I'm personally not going to pressure you in to switching to Linux, even though I've been using it since 1995 and consider it superior politically and aesthetically to Win/Mac.

I have no idea where your last statement came from, you're trolling for some reason, not sure why or the point.

Really, you think so? What do most people use on their computers: MS Office, Firefox and iTunes (That's most people, for me its: chrome, gnome terminal and Emacs--in fact that's what I have open right now, so don't shoot the messenger.)

However, since the majority of people only use Office, a browser and iTunes and iToons works better for them on Macs, its not so dumb after all. (Oh and btw, my friend is a very successful Actuary and therefore probably smarter than you.)

The reason Macs are popular is because they sync well with the users ipods/iphones. A friend switched to a mac air, because his HP "sucked at syncing with his itunes/iphones". And I am sure he will be much happier with a Mac than Windows, but then again he isn't a programmer/sys admin so why would he want to learn Linux, not that there is as much of a learning curve anymore. Probably the same curve as switching between Windows and Mac.

I agree with the nub problem, I just removed it. But the thing I like is the buttons that go with that nub: There's a middle button that I use all the time without thinking about it, whenever I use any other laptop I miss that button, it adds a third/middle mouse button functionality that I use a lot.

What's everyone's favorite Star Trek series, and why? by Sanderlebauin scifi

I definitely like DS9 the best. The writing was brilliant. The stories were mature and dark, there were many great story arcs. Great characters: Sisko, Quark, the Grand Nagus, Moogie, (okay I love the Ferengi.), and Garak!!, Worf, Dax, Kira. Even the annoying characters (Julian and just occasionally Jake weren't that bad.) And I remember hating and dreading Ezri Dax, but the last I watched the 7th season I kind of liked her. Oh and I love Kasidy too.

For me, this series is a step or two beyond the other series: Picard and Data can't make up for all this richness.
