0bin, a client side encrypted pastebin. Open source, coded in Python. by desmoulinmichelin Python

[–]ocrow 3 points4 points ago

I hope haywire's comment gets upvoted because this is a serious concern. Specifically this article details why browser based javascript crypto is usually a bad idea. Note that the javascript that does the encryption is delivered in plaintext. The site doesn't even use SSL. How do you know that the code hasn't been tampered with? And if you don't know that, what's the point of attempting to encrypt it at all?

Traditionally browsers haven't been able to make raw socket requests to arbitrary endpoints, mostly due to security concerns.

And these security concerns are no longer preventing us from doing this because ...?

Inside the one-room house, the reclaimed-redwood platform bed hangs on slender steel rods fastened to the ceiling. The ceiling cap is a vent—the house’s thermostat. [1062x717] by Mind_Virusin RoomPorn

[–]ocrow 1 point2 points ago

I'm really confused by this picture. From the OP photo inside it looks like the room might be around 20ft across, quite large and roomy with a low sloping ceiling. In the other picture of this site from the outside (see parent's link) the shape is completely different -- quite tall, and giving the impression of a rather small space, perhaps 10ft across at most. Either this is a TARDIS house, or it seems the OP photo used a rather wide angle lens giving the impression of a much larger space.

That man was such a wonderful actor. Would B5 have been worth watching at all without him and Peter Jurasik (who played Londo)? They were amazing.

Nice puzzle game! I liked it. I just got stuck because I hadn't found a couple of items, which was frustrating. I ended up cheating to locate the battery and the piece at 1:04 of the walk-through.

FWIW my time was 44:05.

Principles of User Interface Design by Samus_in usability

One primary action per screen

Is this a well established idea? Are there references?

It seems to me that sometimes a screen presents a single central piece of information with many different actions that can be performed on that information, which would go against the guideline. Is that necessarily a bad approach? I would think that direct manipulation interfaces, for example, would allow many actions on an object in one screen.

Should this be instead: one primary action or object per screen?

To be fair, most of the distortion around the "Sarah" is because of a bad masking job. The jpeg artifacts just add to the overall effect. Notice how the black and white text looks okay, even though text usually gets quite heavy artifacts in highly compressed jpegs.

I Can Change Your Mind About Climate - big lessons from a 1hour Aussie Documentary by unclesiin climate

[–]ocrow 1 point2 points ago

Well, they certainly trotted out the usual skeptics: Richard Lindzen -- one of a very small number of skeptical actual climate scientists, although it seems that he's rather skeptical by personality, Bjorn Lomborg a political scientist who used to say that global warming couldn't and shouldn't be fixed and has switched to saying that only new tech can fix it, and Richard Muller, who is I think the most serious of those interviewed as skeptics, and who has come around somewhat after doing studies confirming accuracy of the temperature record.

They also didn't do a great job of presenting the scientific understandings. There are reasons why the vast majority of climate scientists say that global warming is certainly man made, is very likely to continue, will be hard to stop, and presents a high risk of very deleterious and long lasting consequences, but those reasons went largely un-examined by this documentary.

The best interview by far though was with Ben Goldacre (at 48m9s), at which point the narrator finally showed a little insight: "Television programs like this one presenting both sides of the argument evenly might actually be part of the problem."

Still, it was interesting to illuminate how it is that intelligent people can still claim to be skeptical about the existence or importance of anthropogenic global warming. The question I would ask skeptics is: if somehow you became convinced that unchecked human caused global warming will have serious consequences, what response would you advocate?

A blood test that can detect breast cancer decades before the disease develops could be available in five years, scientists have announced. by nomdewebin science

[–]ocrow 0 points1 point ago

Are you saying genetics is a bad way to predict future diseases?

Of course not. That would be facile.

Journalists who write headlines for scientific articles should be careful to ensure that they don't give a false impression about what the research actually shows. Otherwise, what's the point of even having a headline? Correct information has more value than just being a sales technique.

To your actual point, yes, it is my impression also that genetic testing will end up being an important part of cancer diagnosis.

How did the Tea Party turn the Great Recession into another opportunity to grind down government and reward the rich? Progressives let them. by clashfanin progressive

Maybe I read more into your comment than you actually wrote. I guess I'm appealing to a sense of optimism rooted in a definition of "progressive" as being a series of incremental steps forward.
