The new Instapaper update made me smile ... because there was something unexpected and endearing in the release notes ^_^ by mrlaniousin apple

Way way, wayyyy better than gassing up and thinking of some tax evading oil exec on his yacht.

I know this sounds yuppie-ish, but I love getting to use my MoMA umbrella when it rains by danwinin nyc

I loved my Slate.com umbrella, but some thief stole it.

Good short game guides? by bouncing_bear89in golf

[–]menevets 0 points1 point ago

Stan Utley - Art of the Short Game.

I read Pelz, he's okay, I prefer Utley: more succinct, more margin for error, no pushing gadgets to buy, no need to buy that extra wedge. Utley was a tour player.

Here's a chipping video

Here's a pitching video

Just search for Utley on YouTube, plenty of clips.

For putting, Geoff Mangum is pretty good too.

Why Can't We Play Golf Faster? by mustang6560in golf

People don't give a cr@p, that's why.

Observe people playing in the UK for the most part - they know how to keep pace although our habits are starting to seep in over there.

How accurate is Google Translate? by that___dudein ChineseLanguage

[–]menevets 0 points1 point ago

It's another tool in the toolbox. Google Translate says that if there is a word/phrase with a translation on a page that is indexable, that goes into its "brain".

Some things it does decently:

  • Names, places, basically proper nouns pretty well.

  • Colloquialisms, idioms, etc...

  • Words mdbg or Nciku won't have.

Notice the above are short and sweet: 1-4 characters.

More shows should use an appropriate ending piece. A fixed ending piece kills the mood when it doesn't match the ending.

Michael Phelps just wants to play golf by thepastafarianin golf

Lets leave aside all that stuff about the book, personal relationships, etc... Even if he is the opposite of a douche, he still can't teach. He's awful.

Phelps - a word of advice - stay away from Haney. You can do much better.

The 100 best courses - he'll get to play them given he's a famous Olympian, but most of us will have a hard time getting on as they're pretty much all private.

Can we all show some love to an amazing actor right now instead of when they kick the bucket? James Hong, ladies and gentlemen. This guy is awesome. by vectormessiahin movies

[–]menevets 1 point2 points ago

Hong was in a West Wing episode and used the word "shibboleth".

He's sort of the Asian Samuel Jackson in terms of getting work everywhere.

With DVRs and the Internet, Is the ‘TV Schedule’ Outdated Today? by OliverQueen187in television

[–]menevets 2 points3 points ago

Once full seasons of tv shows were released on dvd - that was a harbinger of things to come. Watch when you want no commercials.

I pretty much stopped watching live tv w/exception of sports a long time ago, probably 5 years ago? I'd rather wait to buy digital or dvr episodes just to skip the commercials.

It is fun watching a show live and commenting on it on reddit, Twitter or some live blog.

Meanwhile at hole #10 ... by da5idblacksunin golf

I was once teeing off and a turkey called out right before I was about to swing. Thought I was hearing things. Turns out there actually were turkeys on the course.

I've seen: foxes, deer, aggressive bees, dogs, cats, hawks, gophers, raccoons, gators.

What sites do you use to learn a language? ... or, because i can't find a decent one, what features on a site for learning a language would you want? by liftmehigherin languagelearning

[–]menevets 3 points4 points ago

For Chinese - I'm using ChinesePod, Popup Chinese, MandarinPod and many others - dictionaries, blogs, social media, etc... ChinesePod is part of a company that hosts other language sites as well.

I wouldn't rely on one site, but many.

A photo comparison of actors from Der Untergang (Downfall) and the real life Nazis & Germans they played. by nitonin movies

Unheimlich!

Downfall is on Netflix Instant. Watched it out of curiosity after channel surfing one day and watching Valkyrie. Very compelling.

Seen Battleship? Does Liam Neeson at any point say "You sunk my battleship!" by Thistlemanizzlein movies

This is not a spoiler - no answer to the original question, but they do say something you might say during a game though. It's pretty specific.

Ex-Baseballer picking up golf by sangnastyin golf

[–]menevets 0 points1 point ago

Lots of former MLB players are very good golfers - John Smoltz immediately comes to mind. I think Roger Clemens is pretty good too.

PGA tour player Tommy Gainey played baseball.

I'd rather be picking up golf having played a sport very well than not at all.

Does anyone else keep the clubs in their bag so organized that when one is in the wrong slot you instantly assume it's missing? by Betty_Whites_Muffinin golf

[–]menevets 1 point2 points ago

I don't think it's OCD - not that much of an effort and like everyone says - you know instantly if you're missing a club. OCD is making sure they all line up in a certain way at all times. I don't care what order they're in as long as they're all in the same section.

  • Driver/3W/putter
  • 3/4/5
  • 6/7/8
  • 9/PW/GW/SW (What I like to call the scoring bin, that's more likely the 1st one)

A couple of times, I lent someone my bag and it came back all out of whack and I was like, oh s@#t!, you did not! :-)

I Slice Because I Leave My Hands A Little Open At Contact... Tips? by AhhhBROTHERSin golf

[–]menevets 1 point2 points ago

You can hit draws with an open clubface if your path is more in to out relative to where your clubface is pointing at impact.

You don't have to make a concerted effort to close the clubface. See Ben Hogan

It's all where clubface is pointing relative to clubhead path. Not how fast you fan the clubface.

I quit out of frustration several times. I never left my clubs behind or snapped them or threw them to the side. Just an acknowledgement of "Wow, that's alot of freed up time to do s#*t."
