Oh, I'm an idiot. Thanks. I was wondering why the comics didn't make sense.

Father, 56, in critical condition after being stabbed trying to shield dying son from gang pub attack by Maslo55in worldnews

You're probably right in that a lot of them are just replicas or toys (especially among the wannabe-gangster chavs), but there are people with real guns and real ammunition out there, and it's more common than people think.

I know a few drug dealers who carry their own guns (and I'm pretty sure they're not replicas, these are the kind of people who would carry the real thing) and I'm sure if I asked them, they could point me in the right direction to buy a gun (not that I'd want one). It's not that difficult to get a gun in the UK if you know the right people, or if you know people who know the right people.

I never said that "every tom, dick and harry criminal owns a gun". But to say that nobody has them is wrong.

I live in a rough area, and there are lots of reports of gangs with guns around here. Sure, it's not very common, but it happens more than you think.

My friend was actually robbed at gunpoint last year.

I'm from the UK. The problem is that guns are illegal here, but people have them anyway. And the only people who have them are the gangs and criminals.

The law only stops law-abiding people from getting guns. It doesn't stop criminals from getting them.

I'd prefer it if it didn't automatically change to the next comic every few seconds.

Can we make the bot say "wubredditdrama" and "a sentient bowl of popcorn has written about you" again? Or was that a different bot?

What surprises the Dalai Lama the most. by XibalbaBrujain the14thDalaiLama

I always found this quote to be really condescending.

I "sacrifice my health" to make money because I need that money for food, water and shelter. The dude doesn't have to worry about that, because he's the reincarnation of the Buddha with thousands of followers supporting him. Seems really condescending to look down from his ivory tower and say "Look at those idiots working, don't they realize how much better is to not work?"

Rest in Peace to a fellow Ent, Nick-- Can anyone help get him to the front page of trees for a first and last time? by Shorkeyin trees

[–]haddock420 2 points3 points ago

Sorry for your loss, but r/trees isn't the place for these posts.

We ask that no posts of deceased loved ones be posted in r/trees. These are very personal events and with the trolls and many non-sensitive comments that have occurred previously we have decided it would be better for the trees community not to have these types posts.

Can you explain why you thought Zycin's comment was ignorant and homophobic?

I don't see how calling Mt Everest "Earth's raging hard-on" is ignorant or homophobic.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]haddock420 0 points1 point ago

I agree, I'd prefer if people just used literally to refer to things that actually happened.

But I guess it's no big deal if people want to use this way. People misuse language all the time.

I won't argue with you, since I don't really know how it works. But from what I've read, the consensus among scientists is that nobody's definitively showed how a bicycle balances, and the actual explanation is still up for debate.

So if you do know how a bicycle balances, you should design some experiments, publish a paper, and you'll get a lot of acclaim from the scientific community for it.

Okay, I guess you're right. Looks like I was misunderstanding the definitions of "virtually" and "effectively".

I probably should have used "figuratively" instead (i.e. "literally" can mean the same as "figuratively").

Except, as my dictionary link shows, literally can also mean "effectively" or "virtually".

"My head literally exploded" can mean the same as "My head effectively exploded" or "My head virtually exploded".

Yes, gyroscopic effect was one of the theories as to how it kept balanced. However, it's not the case. The gyroscopic effect is too small to have any effect on balancing the bicycle.

Blog post about it

Here's a video where someone made a bicycle that balances without any gyroscopic effect
