The moral equivalents of America's founding fathers. by sci101in atheism

This is incorrect. Reagan made that statement in reference to the Nicaraguan Contras, not the Mujahideen pictured here.

Thanks for the wind tip. I noticed that I've been getting a headwind in the morning and a tailwind in the late afternoon. I think tomorrow morning I'm going to ride to Tuscon, go see a movie and then ride again later. Again, congrats.

Hey - I think I may have passed you going the other way. Were you on old Highway 80 between Calexico and Live Oak Springs near the border wall on Sunday the 13th? If so, I was the guy in the blue and white helmet going the other way. I'm heading to NYC myself, currently just north of Tuscon. Either way, congratulations on your accomplishment.

You should check when your local bike club has rides. I know mine breaks into many groups according to ability, and the slowest group has some very overweight riders. It works out well since they never go faster than the slowest rider, so there's no pressure and it's a lot of fun.

Desert touring is fun because you get to very remote areas, and it can be beautiful. I wouldn't be doing it in May if I didn't have to however, but this is part of a cross-country tour and I don't really have a choice.

Not a bad idea but I didn't bring lights for this trip. I'm going to get an earlier start tomorrow at 6:30. Hopefully I'll beat most of the heat.

I grabbed a 64oz Gatorade for the first 40, and had two more 32oz for the next 50 (in addition to the water). Still feel pretty beat up at the end of the day though.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it. With all the sweat evaporating I don't really feel that hot, but all that water is going through me.

TIL that when asked what "American Pie" meant, Don McLean replied, "It means I never have to work again." by Lyran_Outcastin todayilearned

The song is lamenting the death of bubble-gum rock of the likes of Buddy Holly, which was replaced by the harder stuff such as the Stones, which is the Jumpin-Jack-Flash in the song. I love the song but I disagree with the sentiment. Rock simply grew up.

What are the best mobile apps for touring? by mileswalletin bicycletouring

I use MapMyRide for GPS and TrackMyTour to share routes and pics. I'm pretty happy with both.

Bike GPS by Warcraft_IVin bicycletouring

This is a common misconception with assisted GPS. A-GPS means that towers provide an approximate location that allows the device to get a fix from real GPS reception from satellites. I've used my iPhone as a GPS on several backpacking trips, far from any cell tower reception.

All versions of the iPhone since the iPhone 3g have had true GPS. They can improve accuracy by using cell site triangulation, but they don't require it. Offline GPS apps that store maps can be had for a few bucks.

Pacific coast tour - where/how to end? by blckorderin bicycletouring

[–]garymrush 0 points1 point ago

I've done the coast from San Francisco to San Diego twice. You have to go inland a little to get around the port at Long Beach, but otherwise it's smooth coast riding all the way to San Diego. All you need to ride through Camp Pendleton between San Clemente and San Diego is a Driver's license, and that'll dump you out into Oceanside. From there you can ride the coast road pretty much straight to the airport, with some great views along the way.

I use the MapMyRide app for the iPhone, and I get about six hours out of my year-old iPhone 4 when running the app (GPS) and a little web browsing. That's short enough that touring is a problem, but there are plenty of cheap battery extenders that will get you through about two days of riding before recharging. The phone/battery or phone/dynamo option is cheaper and more powerful than a Garmin.

Very light shoes: $18 at Walmart by garymrushin bicycletouring

[–]garymrush[S] 0 points1 point ago

You may be right. I was actually looking for some Vans because I wanted something thin and light when I found these. The sole is a really foamy rubber which is very light, but I don't know how long it will last.

On my first tour I wore mountain biking shoes that looked like regular sports shoes, but since I switched to road bike shoes going into restaurants after the ride has been a pain.

I prefer to wear my clip-in biking shoes when touring, so I'm always looking for a good post-ride shoe. Normally I take sandals, but I figured for this trip I'd fInd something like a boat shoe. I found these fashion-wonders at Walmart for $18, and they weigh NOTHING. I swear they must be filled with helium. They're called Huntington Air Speeds.
