No Game of Thrones Meetup Tonight :( by Peaches666in Portland

The sad thing is these numbers are skewed. I always upvote Peaches666 posts/comments when I come across them when they are in the negative zone. So, minus 4 would be minus 5 without me. It takes a villaige.

My dad is offering me $10,000 not to drink alcohol during my senior year of college. What should I do? by dadinho06in AskReddit

[–]einperson 1 point2 points ago

Will your dad actually hand you a $10,000 check? And if so, would taking $10,000 hurt him financially?

If your family has $10,000 to use in behavior management bets.... then you should decline. Have fun your senior year. What good is $10,000? Seriously. It will be gone in an instant.

“Democrat” Roy Schmidt pulls ultimate dick move, jumps to GOP too late for another Dem to run by HouseSpeakerin politics

[–]einperson 0 points1 point ago

I don't see this ending well for Mr. Schmidt. It astonishes me that he think he can pull a stunt like this- in the state of Michigan- and get away with it cleanly. There is this thing called the internet, Mr Schmidt. It's especially good at sniffing out the dishonest folk.

Article on the BBC website about living in Portland, Oregon by Sagillariousin Portland

The Pearl is what it is. I don't think it blows because I think it's really great if you have high income and are in your 30's and up. It's also a great place for business lunches or dinners. It's mostly comprised of nice restaurants, condos, shops, and bars. Sounds good to me. Hey, I can't afford to own there, and in most respects the populace there are not the type of people I hang out with.

In a sense I consider the Pearl it's own sub-city. For the product it is I think it's great. But it's not indicitive of Portland. Personally, I really like what's been done with the half-mile stretch on Mississippi in recent times.

Bikers - please don't run over pedestrians on sidewalks. by ebmfreakin Portland

Ok. You don't need to write a multi-paragraph post because the orginal poster used the word epidemic instead of "too often." I'm a cyclist and I've seen it- I work on 39th and Chavez- so shouldn't I know?

I happen to think this post is very relavent and sincere.

I really wish r/askreddit would make posting rule #1: put your title into the Reddit search engine, limit to TIL- if your post is there don't post. Honor system.

I guess I can stop cold-calling the Disney Channel advertising department asking to feature my ad. I always thought- "Maybe tomorrow." Oh, who am I kidding I'll keep calling.

Feeling down after applying all day to jobs and only getting a craigslist scam in return. Portland redditors, how did you get your job? by suffice_2_sayin Portland

[–]einperson 2 points3 points ago

I got my job way back through Monster.com, before that I got a good paying internship in Germany through the UofO Germanic Languages Dept. What are you looking for? Craigslist is not a good place to look for a career position. Generally, when you apply for a good-paying position with a CV and resume you should expect to be contacted after roughly a week. Companies don't just look to cover a position and start calling or hiring as candidates apply. The longer the application process lasts the better options will increase. If you apply to a job and they call you back right away- it's going to be really low pay or a scam.

I'd suggest looking for jobs posted at your university's career website or alumni website.

What is your "never again" brand, item, store, or restaurant ? by radbrad7in AskReddit

Mickey's, Old English, or any other such malt beer. I'm an old young man now, but I remember my first beer. I was 15 and my friends and I paid a homeless guy to buy us a bunch of 40's of Old E. I took one gulp of it and threw it away. I wonder what it's like to work at the Mickey's, Steel 22 or an Old English plant. I mean it's so bad. Is there a CEO of a malt liquor company not owned by a big conglamerate wearing a suit in an air conditioned office? Is it rude to refuse free beer if you are a factory worker? I always wondered.

TIL That Weihenstephaner beer has been in continuous production since 1040. That's 846 years older than Vernors. by The_Karma_Initiativein todayilearned

[–]einperson 5 points6 points ago

I find it very interesting that the best beers from Germany are not exported. The breweries will export seasonals or specialties but often not their flagship beer. Examples are Doeppelbocks, Oktoberfests, Maerzens, Hefeweizens. Some of these beers are good- but sometimes the best stuff is not available.

A good example is Augustiner Bräu founded in 1328 in Munich.

In the record-breaking heat of summer 2003, the brewery refused to sacrifice brewing quality and traditional process to increase production, even though it could have sold more beer.

It is imported into USA by Global Village Imports, LLC. of King of Prussia, PA. Because distribution is very limited, only Edelstoff and Maximator are available.

Is it legal to make a right turn on a red arrow or isn't it? by sysadmin101in Portland

[–]einperson 0 points1 point ago

This is highly, highly annoying. I work all the way out in Gresham. There is an intersection on NE 238th Dr. with two red left arrows for cars waiting to enter I-84 westbound. I've never seen the front car in the line of cars turn on a red arrow. Several times when I was the first car- made a full stop and made certain it was safe to turn- I got honked at from the cars behind me. A guy caught up to me once and flipped me off and was yelling at me. Ignorance is not always bliss.

Hey r/Portland: Who are you voting for in the mayoral race and why? by thedomilamain Portland

[–]einperson 5 points6 points ago

It's likely your anti-frat boy radar sending you those vibes. He was the president of the fraternity I was in at the University of Oregon about 4 years before I enrolled at school. I talked to him about the Bus Project at an anniversary party/ceremony marking the 100 years our fraternity chapter had been at the UofO. He was a very engaging guy to speak with and asked me lots of questions of what I thought about Portland. This was in 2009- way before this mayoral race.

I mention this because I've spoken to several people who have joked something along the lines of 'I really like Jefferson Smith's ideas but he looks like some fraternity or country club member.' Well, yes he has some great ideas and yes...he was in a fraternity. Lots of good men were. I feel like it's like a scarlet letter in Portland.

Cellphone picture from my Portland-Forest Grove commute yesterday morning. We all live in a very beautiful place. by coolhandlucasin Portland

[–]einperson 4 points5 points ago

Nice picture! The thing is a lot of Portlanders don't live in beautiful places and never see this. I live in Goose Hollow tucked into the west hills downtown-beauiful... but work in Gresham. I kid you not that 75% of the employees have not been anywhere near downtown in years- some I'm not sure ever have. Very conservative people. Sometimes at work I feel like the husband in the South Park episode where the children rule everything because they were naive and sent their parents to prison.

Ha. I've been on Reddit for just over a year and there are things I'll never conform to, I suppose. I posted a video in my first month of a comedic string quartet I liked and it made the frontpage. I thought that was cool and then I read the comments and they were mostly how "OP is an asshole for his title about how his girlfriend dragged him to the preformance- I love classical music and I'm male and fuck OP."

Titles are important.

If you searched for 'Tardigrades' in the Reddit search engine- narrowing it to TIL, you would see that this was already posted 6 times. Though, only two or three specifically mentioned Space in their titles.

like I said all recent (60 days) TIL posts should be in very small font under the rules bar. I'm sure there are lots of great posts and there would be less reposts.

I wish rule #1 of TIL is posting your title in the specific TIL search engine before you post it and see what comes up.

*edit forgot to type search engine~

I hope in the next few years there should be some sort legend on the front page of TIL listing the most reposted stories and in maybe a little smaller font the past titles from the previous 30 or 60 days. If you want to look at cool stories look at those posts, don't repackage them.

I just found out that in 2001, my grandma sued an escort service for about $400. Have you ever found out something incriminating about one of your family members? by kelseyjeanettein AskReddit

[–]einperson 1 point2 points ago

My great, great, great-etc. uncle was a pirate. I did a school project when I was in middle scool on my family history. My grandma had an impressive amount of our family history. This was in 1992- no ancestory.com. Of course he was only a pirate to the Spanish. In Britain he was Sir Francis Drake. In Spain he was Franciscus Draco or Francis the Dragon.
