Yes but the length of a day has no bearing on the number of dates you are sorting. It might be most efficient to sort by largest set of numbers first to smallest set of numbers. This would narrow it down fastests. Most years, then months, then days.

To the best of my understanding it goes like this: To catch you the interested party would have to subpoena your VPN's ISP for their information, subpoena the VPN provider for your information, and then subpoena Liberty Reserve for your information that you bought the pre-paid card with. It is not very likely they would succeed. Possible, yes, but very unlikely.

PS: If you plan on setting up a VPN, take a look into dd-wrt capable routers. I set up mine so all of my traffic is routed over the VPN.

I'm not exactly sure how it works, as I've never used their service. But as I understand it: you set up an account and can make purchases in a way thats similar to paypal and google checkout. They have additional services, one of them being virtual prepaid cards. But to answer your question, yes you use your credit card. So there will technically be a paper trail, but it would be close to impossible to trace it back to you. If you want to be 100% sure you'd have to buy a prepaid card with cash.
