UPDATE: Bad Religion bumper sticker vs Jesus Fish by Pirateerin atheism

[–]audiostatic82 1 point2 points ago

And then I warned him that henceforth anytime she got religious or talked about her church in meetings or around the office I will go into "full out militant-atheist mode."

I have to say, I don't think this is the right approach. This will most likely appear aggressive and reinforce her actions, particularly in targeting you. It may also begin to annoy everyone else. Sometimes you need to fight fire with fire, sometimes you need to fight fire with a cool island song. It would probably be better to find a politically correct phrase and repeat it every time she brings up religion. Politely telling her to shut up will piss her off, but it'll really get under her skin if you do it in a way she can't complain about. Something like 'Not everyone follows your religion, I think it would be best for this meeting and the company if you kept your beliefs to yourself' or 'The workplace isn't the proper environment for discussing your religious views'. You can also say something like, 'It's the company's policy to keep your religious views to yourself during the workday, I would appreciate it if you could not discuss your beliefs on company time'. If your company has a policy like this, then it's pretty close to fighting fire with fire by using her strategy against her. If there isn't a policy, then say it anyway and let her point it out to you during a meeting or whenever, then the next day hang this up somewhere in your workspace where you know she'll see it, when she complains, tell her there's no policy regarding religious beliefs at work, and with a straight face, say you believe that Jesus was a velociraptor and you'd appreciate it if she didn't disrespect your religion. If she continues you can open a dialogue with the purpose of frustrating her, which sounds like it would be easy, or you can file a formal complaint against her for religious intolerance or creating a hostile work environment or whatever you want. The key is to stay calm, relaxed and let her go all crazy.

Meh, I understand your points, and agree to some degree. It just doesn't sound like much fun.

It might just be a combination of chemicals and electrical impulses making me happy when I build something or solve a problem or whatever, but I still enjoy the result, so I'm going to keep doing it.

Big Ten's Delany: Four-team playoff shouldn't include non-division champs (NB: to win a division, you must first be in a conference.) by ZENmotherfuckerin CFB

[–]audiostatic82 3 points4 points ago

On a purely logical level, a team cannot be the best team in the country without being the best team in the conference.

99% of the time, maybe more, this is right. But a few years ago we saw the Big 12 in a situation where this could occurred.

I actually do think it's a little unfair, but I'm ok with it on a conference level. The National Championship is elevated to a point that it deserves to be treated a bit differently, in my opinion.

I don't think anything bigger than an 8 team playoff is a good idea. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact these are still unpaid kids, most of whom won't ever be paid for playing football. A 16 team playoff would be 16 or 17 games for the winning team. That's an NFL season for an 20 year old, who's also taking classes, not getting paid, and in 3 years will get a job as an accountant or real estate agent, or something.

I do like the idea of super conferences though. I think the 16 team conferences is a great idea, but to limit the NC to just those 64 teams is just as exclusive as our current system, if not more so.

My idea, which I've slowly groomed over the past few years with my friends, is a 6 team playoff. You take the top 6 teams, with the limitation of only 2 teams from any one conference. The top 2 teams get a bye. The first round (3v6 and 4v5) is played in the bowl games (which rotate between the top 4 major bowls), the second round (1v 4or5 and 2v 3or6) is played as home games for the no. 1 & 2 seeds and the NC game rotates between the major bowl locations which weren't part of the first round. (So, if we use the fiesta, sugar, rose and orange bowls and the fiesta and rose had the first round games, the sugar, we'll say, gets the NC game. The next year it switches and the sugar and orange have the first round. So every 4 years each bowl location would have 2 first round games, 1 NC game and one year of a non-playoff bowl game) It's not perfect, but I think it's a good compromise between the bowl system, fans (traveling considerations), and still keeping the concept of being ranked 1 or 2 a huge advantage. Another idea my buddy had was a 12 team playoff, 4 teams get byes and the first round is done similar to the first rounds of march madness, where one location would host multiple games on the same weekend. I think 12 is too much and that it would be a mess for a city to try to arrange, but he thinks that a thursday - saturday game schedule for one location and friday - sunday schedule for the would work fine.

This will never happen. I cannot stress this enough. Overtraining is MUCH MUCH different than simply not recovering enough and feeling weak. It doesn't happen "on accident"

We might be using the same word for different conditions or resultant muscle soreness, but I've definitely worked a muscle group too hard on accident before, and I've seen other people do it as well. Overtraining may have a real definition, but I didn't study human biology or sports medicine. If there's a better term for working a muscle past the point of having an acceptable recovery period, I'd be happy to use it, but I've always known that to be the socially accepted definition for overtraining.

what muscle does that work?

I didn't take his question to ask that. That question, which your link is more direct about, is a poor question. It's also a quite old mentality related to isometric lifts, which I rarely see people doing or asking about anymore. It's kind of a remnant from the 80's bodybuilder mentality, at least it seems to be from my experience.

I think I understand people who are new to fitness quite well.

I just try not to make assumptions like this. I don't know what the OP's experience is or what his goals are. Maybe he is asking a stupid question, in which case the response of 'Why does it matter?' is only going to push him away and he's going to find bad information somewhere else. If I can take a bad question and give him good information, it'll hopefully point him in the right direction. You may think you understand people who are new to fitness quite well, but (and I hope I'm not offending you here) I think responding to someone who wants to learn with the response you gave is going to do more harm than good.

I use exrx to figure out what's being used on which lifts, but that's been mentioned. Aside from that, when I'm looking for new stuff, I just google what I'm looking for and read everything I can find. For instance, google ab routine or ab workout and you'll find enough lifts that'll keep you busy for hours.

What I can offer in terms of pulls ups is my pull up routine. I have one day that I call 'The Lats Must Be Punished' (yes I use fitocracy). This is my routine.

  • Weighted Pull ups 5-5-3-3-1-1-1
  • Weighted Chin ups 5-5-3-3-1-1-1
  • I usually give a solid 10 minute rest here
  • Pull ups 3x10
  • Chin ups 3x10
  • Parallel grip 3x10
  • Close grip 3x10
  • Towel or rope grip 3x10
  • Wide grip 3x10
  • Static hold 3x fail (each different grip, pull up, chin up, close grip)
  • Run 1 mile between each set

Notes:

1) I am not a trainer or anything like that, I make up my own routines based on my abilities and it may not work for you .. hell, it may injure you. This is my opinion and my personal routine, nothing more. Most people I show my routine to say I over train, but they also say the same thing about crossfit routines, so take it for what that's worth.

2) Seriously ... I only know things from what I read on the internet, I'm trying to give some advice since you haven't got many responses. Please don't hurt yourself or over train, I'd feel terrible.

3) I have yet to get through all these in one day, mid way through the second set each pull up set becomes a failure set. So my log for parallel grip pull ups, for example, would read 10-8-7.

4) Static holds are held with elbows at 90 degrees.

5) To give you an idea of what I can do, for comparison with my routine, my max weighted pull up right now is 95 lbs, I weigh 185, so I pull up 280 lbs and my max in a row is 27 un-weighted, and 16 with a 20 lbs vest on.

6) I don't have kipping pull ups because I use one of those pull up bar things you hook on an open door frame. I have mine hanging from the ceiling in my basement, but if I kip, I'd knock it off (which I have) and fall to the floor, which sucks.

7) T Nation (warning, T-nation) actually has a fair amount of information about pull ups. good luck.

  • If he's putting together a regiment on his own, it's important to know what you're working as to not over train on accident, or completely miss an important muscle. Like, hey, I wonder if pull ups will make me throw a faster fast ball or give me more control on my slider.

  • If he just wants to get better at pull ups, it's nice to see other exercises he could do aside from pull ups that would help. For instance, if you don't have access to a pull down machine and can't do a pull up yet, you need some other way to work into it.

  • If he's injured, can't do pull ups due to the injury and doesn't want to lose his gains while he's healing.

  • If he's injured and can't do rows or something else, but can do pull ups, and doesn't want to lose his gains while he's healing.

  • Why wouldn't you want to be more informed about your lifts?

That's kind of sad. I wonder if he had 3 beers and just had bad luck, or if he was stumbling drunk.

On a somewhat related note. I find it interesting that if he was at 0.09 and got a DUI, it wouldn't change my opinion on him at all, but if he was at 0.17, it would. This makes me think the current limit might be too aggressive.

[–]audiostatic82 5 points6 points ago

I agree it's not objective, but giving preference to teams who win their conferences isn't the right solution.

What if the star QB is injured and can't play in the conference championship game? What if there is no conference championship game, and the winner of the conference is based on somewhat arbitrary rules like the Big12 a few years back? What if 2 or 3 of the best 4 teams are all in one conference? There's too many ways to find a situation where the best two teams aren't playing when you start making decisions based on politics, finances and geography instead of who's best.

Saying you have to win your conference to be in the playoff is a monetary based rule. It's only purpose would be to ensure revenue from the games gets divided more equally among the conferences. Where I see the benefit in that, that's not what a playoff is for. If you're going to replace one screwed up system with another, why even bother.

What happened to Lucy? by drunkenmonkey22in BurnNotice

[–]audiostatic82 1 point2 points ago

  • Management got arrested or killed.
  • Virgil just disappeared. I think the introduction of Benny was supposed to imply he went back to the Bahamas or some other island, but they never said.
  • Seymour is still around, I'm assuming. He was just Fi's contact when Michael was looking for the bomber. He could make another appearance. Maybe he'll run into trouble this season. *Lucy ... umm, I assume she's still busy with her job at the private security firm. It's very possible that we could find out she had been relocated to DC or something. But yeah, she pretty much up and vanished.

I disagree. The best teams should be in the playoff regardless of conferences. Conference alignments are based on geography, financial arrangements and politics, not performance.
