Just got my first Android. Happy and a little confused. A little help please... by anirban_82in Android

Long pressing on the home screen is taking me to a widgets screen with no wallpaper option.

Nope. The apps screen has a Personalize > Wallpaper option. And wallpaper categories available are "HTC Wallpapers" and "Gallery". Funny thing is, I downloaded a live wallpaper, and on clicking on the app icon, it's taking me to the live wallpaper settings screen. But there seems to be no way to go to the screen directly. Thanks for your response, though

Dear Samsung: fire your entire marketing team. by aesamattkiin Android

[–]anirban_82 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that was breathtakingly condescending. You took a successful phone, and because it's success doesn't fit the mold of what you feel a successful product should be like, you write an incredibly dismissive piece about how the world's largest seller of smartphones needs to be more like Apple. For me, the aspiration device is the Galaxy Note. Not the iPhone, not an Android phone, but the Samsung. Galaxy. Note. To suggest that a company that makes beautiful phones change their entire approach to another company that makes beautiful phones because you cannot understand the beauty of the former is unbelievably narcissistic.

Upvote. Truly. Fuck that guy and his pseudo collegiate, oversimplified, meandering and ultimately pointless bullshit. He has some wit though, just immersed in too much of crap.

  1. A pocketbook costs anything between Rs. 100 - 200 ($2 - $4) for non-copyrighted 'classics', works of Dickens, Twain, Wilde etc. For current bestsellers, its about Rs. 250 - 500 ($5 - $10). My copy of 'Dragon Tattoo' cost Rs.350 during the height of Larsson fever. Graphic novels cost much more, about Rs. 850 - 1400, and hardcovers are almost unheard of for English books.
  2. I'm no expert, but looking at bookshops, its mostly bestsellers, self-help and management books etc. An eclectic mix. Increasingly, bookshops are stocking sci-fi and fantasy, with fare ranging from Tolkein to the 3 Terry's (Pratchett, Brooks, Goodkind). For Sci-Fi, its most of the greats and some not so greats.
  3. British authors were always available, not so much American. Even today its a little tough to get one's hands on a Cormac McCarthy or even Lovecraft (I know because I was looking). But yes, both availability as well as affordability has grown tremendously in the last 10 - odd years, especially in the larger cities.
  4. Very. I sometimes feel like I am the only owner of a Kindle in my city of 6 million. Not true of course, one guy in my office owns two and another has just ordered one, but we are three guys who bond over our shared love of technology. Outside of that, I have NEVER seen anyone reading from an eReader in the wild, except me.

And from my perspective, there is ALWAYS a better alternative to beating. For example, I remember my computer privileges being revoked after I ignored my grandfather's warning and managing to infect his PC with a virus. This was when he had the only computer in the house and he was (still is) quite a bit of a gamer. So for the next 2 months I watched him play Doom II and couldn't myself. For the next couple of years or so I couldn't use his computer unsupervised. Not only did that teach me a better lesson about respect than ANY of my father's beatings, it also made sense because the punishment fit the crime. It didn't make it feel like he hated me for what I was, which my dad's beatings did. And finally, when I was allowed to use his computer again, it felt like a big deal, and a responsibility. Not only did I never ignore him again, I took extra care of his computer even when he didn't ask me to. Today, I respect him, and listen to him far more than I respect my dad for all his beatings. Don't get me wrong, I love my dad, but I see him as a flawed human being with little self control. I respect him as a professional and love him as a friend, but don't see him as a guide or have any fond memories of him from my childhood. True, maybe this doesn't apply to all kids, but from what little research I have done on the subject, it does to a lot. Beating kids because you love them seems a lot like hazing in college i.e. a flimsy excuse to either exert ones power or an act of frustration. Like I said, sure there are situations where beatings may not do much harm, but I have seen precious few situations where beating was the ONLY positive option.

All right, maybe I shouldn't have assumed, but since I have suffered something similar, it's difficult when people "stand up" for something that can easily lead down that path. But I'm sorry I came off so strong. I guess my point is that there are other ways of disciplining children, EFFECTIVE ways, and the problem with corporal punishment is that its a slippery slope. At its core, it's you, an adult, beating up a defenseless child, and he or she having absolutely no defense against what you do. There's a reason why people look down upon it, and its because often, the negatives so far outweigh the positives. Once again, it comes down to what you feel is REASONABLE. And it's entirely you, no rules, no guidelines, no training except what your parents taught you (and they could be just as wrong), and most of all, no real correlation between the punishment and the crime. Corporal punishment is a quick-fix, an easy way for parents to get their kids to shut up, but if its a beating for talking out of turn, a beating for doing schoolwork wrong, a beating for throwing tantrums and another beating for not eating dinner, it tends to have an extremely negative effect.

You're right, I probably should. But if I was the kind of person to do that, I probably won't. Where does the line lie when you are beating your kid? And more than anything else, my comment was a visceral reaction. I am sorry, I do realize that it was a bit too harsh, but when someone can see that image and feel that the first thing that he needs to do is stand up for corporal punishment, it's a bit disturbing. I was beaten as a kid too, and within reasonable limits. But I don't remember a single instance where beating taught me a permanent lesson. Other kinds of punishment did. True, your story may be different, which is why it's pointless to argue about that. Like I said, more than anything else, my comment was a gut reaction.

I'm sure the people perpetrating this felt the same as you do. It's just that to them, the line falls somewhat further. If the first thing that comes to your mind after seeing these images is "OMG, I hope this doesn't discourage parents from beating their kids", you did NOT turn out fine. You may not be doing drugs or making babies, but perhaps if you were beaten a little less, you might have had a bit more empathy.

Thanks a lot. Craiglist isn't much of an option where I live, but you're right, maybe freelance writing projects is what he needs. He's also been trying to get a documentary made, maybe it'll be good if he can focus his energies there.
