What exactly did the nazis stand for and how did those positions compare to other political positions 50-100 years ago? by WoodyGuthrie-in AskHistorians

[–]WoodyGuthrie-[S] -1 points0 points ago

fixed, thank you

scale and accusations are hard to compare imo.

it's interesting you bring that up, though- i recently read about the nazi's adoption agency and how the nazis were strongly against abortion- if the woman was aryan, anyway. aside from the racism, it's existence somewhat produced a human side to the german gov at that time.

Kurt Vonnegut on book burning. "I am very real" by SatelliteJanein TrueReddit

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

shit, he usually brought me up out of depression if i was in a low. he often provided me with "hope" or at least indifference toward my petty problems by the end of a book.

Kurt Vonnegut on book burning. "I am very real" by SatelliteJanein TrueReddit

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 5 points6 points ago

I've noticed no one's mentioned he has written non-fiction, which is more relevant to this post- he has a few books that're collections of essays, letters, speeches etc. For someone who has an opinion on a wide range of things, it's surprising they're all fairly well-thought out. I've noticed that no-bullshit-ness is somewhat common with people educated in anthropology.

his attitude seems to have shifted a bit in his latter years though, after 9/11 and US belligerence. more of that "we're fucked today, hope for tomorrow" vibe. I don't blame him. he's still unparalleled, in my eyes, in how well he provided entertainment, yet at the same time provided insight, and promoted critical thought and the like. All in writing that could be understood by most people with a basic grasp of english.

RIM isn’t restructuring. It’s dying. by soni_soniin technology

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

bailout like agreements often include restructuring and a more sustainable business plan. most of both repubs and dems are economically liberal on national competition, compared with the rest of the world, but are more willing address international competition which may threaten the country's interests.

How exactly did humans discover which plants we could eat? by IMightBeACylonin AskHistorians

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

its pretty amazing how a lot of todays most popular edibles, from tomatoes to legumes, closely resemble highly toxic plants. I can't think of how any sane person, who isn't suicidal, would be the first to find out these plants were edible.

TIL the french resistance was made up of hundreds of thousands of people, made up of groups from the likes of socialists and communists to Jews and Catholics, and played a significant role in the latter years of WWII by WoodyGuthrie-in todayilearned

I thought this was worth posting as I always had the impression it was a few nationalists and a few jews sabotaging things here and there, never realized how many people from such diverse backgrounds were involved.

Spike Lee tweets Zimmerman's address, was wrong about it, and has endangered an innocent woman's life. by JazzNeuroticin politics

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

this is very true, I think it reflect the current situation quite well- aside the past being very real, where conflicts like this now a days are symbolic. I believe this is about the likes of the pinkertons, right?

Honestly? I posted a song vaguely related to the subject and my username for the opportunity to spread guthries music and expose people to the history of working people's movements in America. and the karma.

Stormcloak or Imperial and Why by Lapiz_Azuliusin skyrim

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 1 point2 points ago

the racism is a natural reaction to being ruled by a different race- like white people who used to rule african countries. it's also a tool the stormcloaks use to make the people agree that they should rule their own land as and make them want to get from under the elfs thumb more passionately. the africa analogy also holds up in the fact the the elfs extract a lot of resources and which they send back to their homeland, cutting the people of skyrim out of any profit.

I spent a year in County Jail, from 1/14/2010-1/14/2011, AMA by jailhousethrowawayin IAmA

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 107 points108 points ago

this is how i know your not bullshiting. most jails are hell of a lot different than how tv and movies portray it. If anything, I've found it more laid back and friendly than on the outside. There's the view of "we're all in the same boat, let's try to make it as easy for each other as possible" The biggest problem is if people think your only in there for the weekend than they may try something- the biggest piece of advice i can give a person is network with the older guys and act chill. Never get defensive because people may be insulted by that. (MAke sure to network with the inmates who actually run the pod and not the ones that act like it- the ones that run the pod are much more laid back are older and the most influence, the ones who act like it walk around like they own the place and are always trying to scam this or that guy, and are usually young.)

Once in a while I'll even find my self missing being in there- hanging out all day, chatting, sharing stories, playing cards (& gambling for commissary), and having all the time in the world to read the books you've been meaning to read at some point.

I did a year in country myself. A lot of interesting people and stories from there.

Honest question, can't Ron Paul run as an independent candidate? by jojoplayin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

He can but wont. All the hype about him this past decade is a strategy (initially funded by the republican party) to attract today's largely liberal young people toward the right- the need for it became urgent after all the newly political people got involved after 9/11 and the wars. This is why people who are new to politics, often young people, make up most of his base. Without doing things like this the republican party wont survive much longer without some major shifts in position- which is near impossible, as no matter what they do it'll piss off half of the party's base (the halves being regular conservatives and the fundies/extremists.)

Now THIS is a lot of snow. Over 17 meters of snowfall this year in Hokkaido, Japan. by EraEricin pics

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 16 points17 points ago

it's fucking 80 degrees in maine right now. My house is situated on the back side of an hill and usually is the last place for the snow to fully melt in my area- we often still have snow on the ground in may, but due to the warm weather and low snow fall we dont have any on the ground any more.

I want to be excited for the warm weather but this is borderline scary.

/r/communism introduces the Stalin Clause: "If you say Stalin or stalinists aren't communist, you get instantly banned!" by planaxisin SubredditDrama

[–]WoodyGuthrie- 0 points1 point ago

I think the fact that the most well-known examples of communism, the ussr and China, having survived, and even thrived, as long as they did attests to it being viable. Of course russia isn't any more, but was long enough to be considered a system that works. there are also a few other examples of communism working, like in vietnam, so suggesting communism isn't a viable system is ridiculous.

For the record I'm not defending communism and don't support it, but I accept a system I don't agree with actually works.

Venezuela has always had a lot of crime, drug trafficking and corruption. It's going to take a lot more than removing one deranged madman from power to bring the stability and prosperity the country has potential for.
