Internet Man Does Not Want To Be On The Google Anymore by redcolumbinein TwoXChromosomes

So, does George Tierney of Greenville South Carolina know about Reddit?

Maybe he'll Google himself and learn about this forum where we discuss many interesting things.

My favorite "first" so far: the drive-thru carwash by dierythmusin daddit

[–]SirElkarOwhey 11 points12 points ago

I found it helpful to hype these things up in advance: "It's going to be noisy, and splashy, and we'll be inside the car when it gets a bath! And you can see it all on the windows! Are you ready?!" Then narrate with a ridiculous happy voice: "Here comes the water!"

You don't want your kids afraid of new experiences: you want them to see everything that happens as a new game to play. If you have the right mindset, everything is interesting, and most of it is fun. This is the time to teach them that mindset.

My sense of this is that neither one was mature enough to be in a living-together arrangement, and that the guy who married her in Vegas was completely off his rocker. He must never have heard the advice about not putting one's anatomy in crazy.

Mightn't you want one or the other? I'd like mass-market processed food to either (a) actually be made with food, or (b) go away. That doesn't mean I think we need the government to make 10,000 new rules about what we eat. What I think is that people who buy tons of chemically-colored crap that's mostly high fructose corn syrup should stop buying it.

Bill Maher: Liberty University Is Not A Real School by btrflyin politics

[–]SirElkarOwhey 18 points19 points ago

Association with those consuming alcohol

Quoting Matthew 11:19: "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’"

So, we see that Liberty University (in the sense that bondage is freedom) would kick Jesus out if he showed up. Good to know.

The Great Rose Bowl Hoax. You gotta give point to pranksters who can get their work seen live by millions of people on national television, instead of just hearing about it later.

The bible *does not* say life begins at conception. Rather, it says that life begins with the drawing of breath. Gen 2:7 by FrankManicin TwoXChromosomes

[–]SirElkarOwhey 2 points3 points ago

If you haven't seen this, you should:

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/slacktivist/2012/02/18/the-biblical-view-thats-younger-than-the-happy-meal/

It documents how the idea that "the Bible teaches abortion is murder" was invented in the 1980s. In 1979, well-known Christians published books and articles noting that the Bible writers didn't regard the unborn as morally equivalent to people, and presented quotations from the Bible to illustrate the point. Then the official line became anti-abortion, and those who wanted to keep their positions as leaders changed their view of what the Bible taught, and Bible translations published after the change in doctrine had the words changed to reflect the new teachings.

They didn't like what the Bible said, so they changed it to reflect what they thought it should say.

Redditmen, what are some things you hate hearing from your girlfriend? by Eskape_in AskMen

[–]SirElkarOwhey 0 points1 point ago

Just launch into the subject directly. Do not give it advance billing.

"We got a letter from the bank today..." "The doctor says I have Herpes Simplex 10..." "I'm leaving you to become a nun..."

Just spit it out.

Creepy AM Phone Call - Looking for advice on what to do next. by ladyroxannein TwoXChromosomes

[–]SirElkarOwhey 3 points4 points ago

When I answer the phone, you have 15 seconds to clearly identify yourself and convince me to talk to you. If you don't succeed, I hang up.

This makes my life much less stressful; I recommend it to you.

Is it still rape if she's drunk? by audreylynnein TwoXChromosomes

[–]SirElkarOwhey 4 points5 points ago

What I don't understand about this discussion is this: I can't imagine wanting to have sex with somebody who was drunk. I only want somebody who wants me - someone who has choices, and who chooses me, and who actively wants to do what I'm planning to do.

Someone with no choices, someone who's impaired, someone who's reluctant - I don't want anything to do with that all. If we meet at a bar and you're drunk, it won't matter how hot you are - I'm not interested.

Honestly boys, do we notice our physical imperfections more then you/our boyfriends do? by Careymulligan23in AskMen

[–]SirElkarOwhey 77 points78 points ago

What you have to remember is that a woman in a picture has nothing but how she looks. She doesn't move, she doesn't have a nice-sounding voice, her facial expression doesn't change, she isn't warm, she doesn't have any scent. So a woman in a picture is photoshopped to perfect the one thing she has to offer.

An actual woman in the same room as me who smiles and raises an eyebrow and walks and talks is so much more than a picture, that imperfections which get photoshopped out of pictures don't even rise to the threshold of attention in real life.

So yes, you're seeing yourself in a harsher light. When you're looking at a scar or something, all you're seeing is the scar. And you don't find your own body heat sexy because it's already inside you. When we look at you, we see way more than a stretch mark, and your warm skin feels nice.

This could potentially get you in trouble, you might want to check your school's actual leafleting policy first.

To be clear, you wouldn't put your name on them. You'd just put them where people would see them, and do so when nobody was watching.

But I think a better avenue might be to use electronic communication. I wonder what the rules are about starting a Facebook group "Support Comprehensive Sex Education At John Doe High School" ?

The problem you are having is that some people think the purpose of school is to NOT teach some things.

I think I can imagine printing up a flyer saying "Want better information about sex?" and putting a bunch of URLs on it and sticking a few of them up in the school, or at least making a list of such URLs and mailing them around to people in the class.

Include a warning that, for in-school assignments, the official teaching materials are to be considered correct. As students, you have to pretend the official curriculum is right, no matter how wrong it is.

how do I end a friendship without hurting the other person? by somebodyelsesskyin AskWomen

[–]SirElkarOwhey 1 point2 points ago

You don't need a bright line, exactly. Just arrange to have things to do: skip lunch to catch up on work, or schedule a dentist appointment, or arrange to have lunch with some other friend of yours. Set up a date right after work so you can't go out to eat with her. Curtail your interactions without hitting her over the head.
