Midnight release... Got more than I expected. Possibly because I was the only one not buying Diablo 3? by yuanbacain gaming

[–]Seelenkuchen 1 point2 points ago

I never said that the gameplay was the thing that intrigued me most about Max Payne. Also I never said that I think that it is a bad game like I said I haven't had a chance to play it yet. However, stuff like this just discourage me because to me the former games especially the MP2 were memorable because of the surreal and ironic elements, the comic book cutscenes and the sharp dialog.

I am not attacking MP3, I am not running around and screaming that I hate Rockstar and that Remedy should have done it, all I am saying is that I was drawn to the series because of certain elements and I am not sure if those elements are still there.

This! Don't get me wrong the first review I read of this game was pretty postive and I am sure it is a good action game

However it had senteces in it like (translating from german) "Max Payne has been transported from his surreal and artistic world to a realistic setting" , "Max Payne's grim noir look had to make room for brasilian temprament" and "he has been fused with Nathan Drake of Uncharted and John Mclain of Die Hard"

Which basically said (to me), everything you loved so dearly about the first games is gone: time to move on

What's a weird thing you do regularly (preferably non-sexual) that you can't just tell other people? by YouKnowHerin AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 4 points5 points ago

I actually had to cut down my own pacing after it escalated and I was starting to walk circles around my house (for hours) only carrying my ipod and a notepad. It was, however, one of the most productive phases of my life. Unfortunately everyone else thought I was going nuts.

Can an international German student work in Germany? by Flapjack777in AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 0 points1 point ago

There is something called a Sprachkursvisum and if I read § 16 AufenthG. correctly you should be able to work with one of those, however, I am not a lawyer. Why don't you just ask to the consulate itself ?

I really wanted to see the movie but they released it 3D only in my hometown, however, since I have huge problems with 3D (weird eyes) I now have to wait for the bluray.

Dear Americans (mostly) wanting to come to work in Germany, for however long. This will be you big barrier: Speaking german. by Velenorin germany

[–]Seelenkuchen 2 points3 points ago

They are not linguistically limited. They are just a more closely knit community, they need to get to know you etc, and diffrent accents or dialects will mark you as an outsider for the first few days. Many of these companies have people working there for 30+ years. However not being able to speak german would more or less isolate you, making networking pretty hard.

[–]Seelenkuchen 2 points3 points ago

You are actually serverly limiting your options by not being able to speak german. A lot of medium sized companies in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg offer a great deal of job stability and advancement opportunities, however these guys already need some time warming up to you if have a german dialect that is diffrent from their. So english only you might get a job there, but your advancement opportunities are rather slim.

What are German's taught with regards to WWI & WWII? by jlesnickin AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 0 points1 point ago

mhm we learned about a lot of things:

WWII

We learned about the post-WWI situation and the public rejection of being labeled solely responsible of WWI, we learned about the instability of the Weimar Republic in the late 20's and early 30's. How von Papen and other german politicans helped Hitler become the german chancellor, believing they could control him. About the terror spread by Hitler's followers. About the way Hitler prepared the economy and the rest of the country for war (eg. the building of the Autobahn). How Germany attacked Poland, then France, Luftwaffe attacks on Britain (Bombing of Coventry). About how the nazi state was structured, about the persecution of minorities. About the extremely bureaucratic way the holocaust was handled (Wannsee conference etc.) and how it basically was one huge state built machine to kill people. About restitance against Hitler in Germany and France. About how the war went, atrocities committed etc. Some stuff about the pacific war fought by the americans, the war on the islands, bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and so on.
Most likely forgot to mention some stuff here.

WWI

(I'm gonna keep this short as I grow tired of writing) How how all the different states were tangled up in non attack treaties. About how jazzed all of Europe was about another war (everyone thought it would be quick and easy, with only a few people dead but a couple of new territories) How Franz Ferdinand was killed leading Austria to declare War on Serbia, various treaties forcing Germany and Russia into the mix. The domino effect of different treaties escalating the war on a continental level. About how brutal this first modern war was, about the gas attacks etc. And of course about the ending.

History class is already a few years behind me so don't be mad if I got something wrong, best to look everything up yourself. Also we learned more about WWI but I am procrastinating atm and I need to get back to write my paper

TIL that 10,000 Germans fled Germany during WW2 to join the British Army and fight against the Nazi Regime by Amathevin todayilearned

[–]Seelenkuchen 1 point2 points ago

In Germany and Austria many POWs were used as farmhands, they would sleep, life and work at the farm they were assigned, too. Some of them even stayed after the war, fearing that they would be seen as spies or collaborators in their home countries, therefore I do not see a reason why this should not be true. (btw being a farm hand doesn`t necessarily mean that you were treated any better than in a camp, it all came down on the employer)

What's one movie everybody loves that you can't stand? by logimanin AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 1 point2 points ago

A lot of people I know only liked Avatar because of the 3d effects.

However, I've got weird eyes and can't watch 3d, as everything is either super far away or my eyes only register every odd frame reducing a movie to a super choppy slide show. Therefore I had to settle with the far less impressive 2d version, which I found lacking in almost every department. Especially parts of the story and most of the dialog made me cringe.

What viewpoint do German films about WW2 come from? by university90in AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I know, knowledge of past mistakes is always important, also it is important to remember that not every thing was black and white but also various shades of grey.

My grandmother usually cries when talking about the nazi era, as she mostly remembers the terror. Apparently my grandfather, who was a very respected person in my hometown (a village back then) hated Hitler and ranted about him various times. He openly called ss officers pigs and he wanted to do a carneval speech about Hitler (but was locked in by his family for fear of his safety). Therefore my grandmother always feared that her father could just disappear one day, as some other people from the town were thrown into a kz for this reason.

She also calls nazis "hitlers" for whatever reason, dunno why.

What viewpoint do German films about WW2 come from? by university90in AskReddit

[–]Seelenkuchen 3 points4 points ago

Mhm its more like the whole thing is talked to death. If a foreigner asks me about ww2 Ive got no problems talking about it to him (unless he is a dick and has the all germans where nazis attidude). The topic also comes up every now and again with friends and family (especially with my grandmother who remembers the war and once she starts talking about it there is no stopping her).

But the amount of stuff we hear about it in school and the media is ridiculous. We characterize ourselfs with the nazi era all the time; it is the whole nation of guilt thing but that is not working out anymore for the younger generations.

For example when I was about 11 years old I sat in history class and my teacher told us the real name of Pope John Paul 2nd. Up until then I did not know that a Pope has to choose his own name, so I laughed and asked if he disliked his real name. My teacher went ballistics and told me how it is not appropriate for a german to make fun of a polish name because of our history etc. And that is stupid and that is one of the reasons german youths are fed up with talking about the war.

TL;DR we talk about ww2 but we don`t want it to be the only thing we talk about

You are wrong we talk about it all the time, in school world war 2 was on the curriculum from year 8 to 13. every week there is at least one ww2 documentary on, and there are number of really good german ww2 movies.

Topher Grace edited the 3 star wars prequels into one 85 minute movie. by kittenrainbowin StarWars

Lucas usually approves of fan edits as long as they are not made with bootleged versions or can be confused as a a real lucasfilm product so as long as this edit wasn`t made using pirated material and has a disclaimer at the beginning it should be fine

25 Reasons real books are here to stay. by genius_waitressin books

[–]Seelenkuchen 33 points34 points ago

I kinda disagree with some of the things said in the article. For example the thing about bathtubs. I hate books getting wet I don`t care about if it is a a cheap paperback or a expensive hard cover, so reading near a pool or in a bathtub is always kinda tricky.

Also the thing about sharing, I have shared books with my family ever since I was small but them living hundreds (even thousands) of kilometers away from me almost killed of this family tradition, however, with ebooks it finally became possible again.

My point being, printed books will never go away, but even though ebooks have some downsides they also have a lot more advantages than many bookophiles will like to admit
