Yeah it's not like there was a countdown going to when the rocket took off or anything.

I try to judge the bathsit craziness of directors by their personalities and not the content of their films.

Stanley Kubrick wasn't that crazy and most of the stories about him are fairly exaggerated. Lars Von Trier, Alfred Hitchock or Rainer Fassbender, David Lynch and David O Russell, on the other hand were/are some particularly crazy motherfuckers

ELI5: How does instagram make money? by yialin explainlikeimfive

[–]Misanthropologist 5 points6 points ago

It doesn't, basically. What they're buying is a user base and possible competitor in online image sharing. Facebook is buying a social media market share more than a product.

Controversial but very interesting: Why Skrillex is a fraud by mihirutherein electronicmusic

The only thing I care less about than Skrillex is his legitimacy as an artist.

Bank of America customers: Free admission to certain museums first weekend of every month by gameflyerin nyc

You know what's better than free admission to museums? Not being with Bank of America.

Art appreciation is subjective? I don't even like Scott Pilgrim but given the audience I'd say that's a duh, they're chantards not cineastes.

Where can you find the most authentic Japanese food in NYC? by LunacyNowin nyc

[–]Misanthropologist 0 points1 point ago

The thing about japan is it's insanely westernized. I had a lot of good sushi and standard japanese fare but they fucking love all things western as a civilization the same way not too bright college students love japanese character tattoos. As a result, there's a lot of places to get very good, interesting variations on american food.

Directed by Tim Burton: Johnny Depp is eccentric and creepy with pale makeup. Anyone else think this paradigm has just become a parody of itself at this point? by snorchin movies

[–]Misanthropologist 2 points3 points ago

Big Fish was fairly typical Burton but better than most of his recent stuff. I'm not crazy about it but it's not bad, the only annoying thing is that it seems to be the all time favorite movie of any of my friends that don't watch a lot of movies.

It's pretty interesting to see how regional fare gets imported from one country to another. When I'm abroad I'll usually try to get a burger or something american once to see how it's done over there.

There was a vietnamese performance artist who did similar things, including not going indoors for a year, spending a year without money and some other things. You could probably google him or, if not today, look him up at a library.

Prices of things compared to Toronto by zipzaplolin nyc

[–]Misanthropologist 0 points1 point ago

New York has most anything at every possible price point. Liquor is definitely cheaper unless you're going someplace upscale, food is generally about the same but there are some cheaper options than some of the more general stuff you find in Canada, especially comparing certain grocery stores. Clothing, again, pretty broad range there, so you can go to Uniqlo or an upscale boutique depending on your tastes or what you're looking for.

Having lived in Canada I'd say most everything here can be found cheaper barring rent and healthcare. Unless you're coming from Vancouver in which case rent is about the same.
