How do you define "gamer"? by willneversaylolin Games

[–]Linacaruso 0 points1 point ago

Well.. it sort of is in the sense that a 'gamer culture' has emerged. Yes there is no word for 'movie watchers' but there also isn't a stereotype for them either. A clear stereotype about gamers has emerged about gamers, indicating that they are being perceived as a cohesive unit - a social group. Therefore, I do think it is more than just playing games... For instance, my mom played plants and zombies a few times but she wouldn't in a million years say she is a 'gamer'. I've played games my whole life and would consider myself a gamer... it isn't a special underground club but it is a group to which one chooses to belong. imho.

I think it is hard to qualify what a 'gamer' is based solely on play behaviour. I am more of the social identity school of thought... being a 'gamer' is so much more than interacting with different games for a specific amount of time. I think it is about the extent to which one identifies with the social group of 'gamers.' Is it part of their identity? Do they identify with other gamers? etc etc

It is quite long :( I appreciate your persistance! Sometimes, to get clear answers in psychology, you really have to be a bit long winded. However I made sure it wouldn't take more than 20 minutes to complete.

At least there is the possibility of prizes! :)

Thank you all for participating in this survey! Incase you were wondering why this survey was so short, it is becasue it is a pilot study to get an idea of which kinds of groups are viewed to be similar to online gamers. If you imputed your email at the end I will be sending over the next phase of this survey to you when it is up and ready! Thank you so much for all of your help!

Hey Reddit gamers: if any of you have 5-10 minutes to spare please fill out this online questionnaire for my friend's PhD study into online gaming communities. Do it for science! by Golden_Dalekin gaming

Hello Reddit :) I am currently conducting research that looks into the interrelatedness of group perceptions - and I need your help! As a vast and diverse group, Reddit seemed like the perfect choice to reach a wide variety of individuals. It will only take 5 to 10 minutes of your time and not only would it be greatly appreciated, but you can have the personal satisfaction of contributing to science! I'm just asking for an answer to one simple question: are some groups more similar to each other than other groups? If you have a spare 5 minutes please click on the link below! Cheers!

This has been posted in the gaming forum already and they have been overwhelmingly generous with their support! I am hoping to even out the responses by getting a non-gamer point of view! Thank you so much!
