Hey Pack, remember when I said some writers would have some words for us? by onewattin WolfpackPublishing

As a writer who is taking this summer to get productive and serious about it, that's a good thing to see. Thanks!

What is your 'guilty pleasure' TV show? by RobertVargasin AskReddit

[–]Faustyna 1 point2 points ago

I watch The Jeremy Kyle show. It's the UK variation of Maury, only with slightly more actual help provided. It's good for background noise when I'm working, and they occasionally do seem to help people so that's nice.

Also Degrassi. Everything bad that can possibly be imaged happens every week to these kids. It's ridiculous.

Any good books that are focused primarily on magic? by Elfkingin Fantasy

[–]Faustyna 1 point2 points ago

[It's past midnight, so all that's a bit rambly. Her website should help clarify anything odd I phrased below this].

There's also a collection of short stories simply titled Tortall and Other Lands which I recommend, though one of the stories is set after the Trickster Books, so read those first.

The Circle books are well written. There are two quartets I believe, and one stand alone novel (plus one made-for-audio drama that was later transcribed as a book) - more to be written (along with some new books about Numair).

Within the first quartet there are 4 main characters, mages, and their lives are shown as they grow up and learn their craft (each book is 'about' one character, but all 4 appear)- comparable to how in the Tortall books they had knight training. In the second quartet each book focuses even closer on the individual mages, and continues with their stories as they grow up.

I believe Pierce has said the books are more inspired by the East than Tortall's European outlook as well- you see more diversity than from what I remember being shown in Tortall, and the magic system is different than The Gift- discussed far more in depth. Personally I also think that the setting is a bit more 'in the future' than the straight-medieval of Tortall, but not by very much. The difference between oh... the 1300s and the 1600s, perhaps?

So yes, certainly read them. Highly recommended.

Also with the Tortall books there should be another set you missed- There's:

Alanna's story (Song of the Lioness),

Daine's story (The Immortals),

Kel's story (Protector of the Small),

Aly's story (Trickster), and

Beka's story (Provost's Dog)- Beka being an ancestor of Alanna, but the latest series that just finished last year.

So that's 17 books in Tortall, and the short story collection.

Circle has 10 books (two quartets, two stand alone books).

Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic books. Her Tortall books have magic too, but most of the characters are warriors first and mages second.

Predictions for episode 8? by Jesuschrist2011in TheLastAirbender

[–]Faustyna 2 points3 points ago

The next episode could be 'filler' in so much as they're all planning what to do next on Airbender Island. Cue stories from decades ago, flashbacks, and Korra learning more about herself- and her past lives.

I'm starting to get slightly concerned with the show. by IV-65536in TheLastAirbender

[–]Faustyna 2 points3 points ago

LoK is all about the characters. There's less filler, faster pacing, and the best animation I've seen in any cartoon. The politics is part of the story, so are the small things- the crushes, Tenzin's relationship with Korra (and with Lin, and Pema), Bolin and Mako as brothers.

There little hints of comedy are still there, and more refined I feel than in Avatar. I loved TLA, but Sokka was 14 and pulled some slapstick now and again. Bolin is less forced.

I can't say much more. I love the series, and would recommend you rewatching it. I don't think the focus is gone.

Season 1 is 12 episodes, season 2 will be 14. Given the sheer amount of awesome LoK is, and the amount of viewers, I am really hoping for more seasons to be ordered.

No worries :)

Given that there's no Korra for two weeks, I may have to work through some of the anime I haven't seen yet.

As for suggestions: Eve no Jikan, a 6 ep OVA about androids that I recently watched.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit fantasy anime in a medieval-y East

The Twelve Kingdoms - rather long anime with several arcs, medieval-y China alternate!reality.

I keep hearing Spice and Wolf is awesome, haven't gotten around to it yet, may do that myself.

It is good, though incredibly random. 6 episodes long, great rock soundtrack- nothing to lose.

I believe metal, lighting, and wood are elements in Chinese culture (along with water and fire, I think). Setting up for cross-cultural bending? Lighting being Fire with a waterbending style, Wood as Earth with an... airbending style, Pure Metal being earth with a waterbending style?

It helps if you realize Avatar is highly influenced by anime. FLCL, Ghibli, FMA now.

Also, it may have been a small reference to James Cameron's Avatar as well, given the mechs and such. I may be stretching it though.

Hey r/fantasywriters! I'm having some troubles. by WHSin fantasywriters

[–]Faustyna 0 points1 point ago

Honestly I'd like to read a different 'style' of fantasy, weird word placement and all. An odd style is fine, as long as it's well written. From what I'm seeing of your posts you do write and express yourself well in English. I'm not seeing any mass errors that would make the prose unreadable, just a bit of spelling here and there.

I agree with the other replies- write your work, edit it later. I'm sure you can find a lot of friends here who can help you edit as well.

:)

The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO is made from bits of the podcasts, so you will hear overlap. That said, there's more to the podcasts than what's done on TRGS. I would recommend listening to them anyway.

There's usually a stream of Saturday Morning cartoons that catches Korra (the link is put in the official episode discussion page, or at least it was last week). Not great quality, but you can still watch it and get the HD later.

I didn't meant to imply that divorce is fine, but in some cases a civil divorce may be permitted for the good of the spouses or children. There is though still a marriage there, it is just a civil split.
