Corn isn't all that good for you. I gave up popcorn along with some other positive changes I've made in my diet, and I feel great. Ironically, the butter and salt may actually be healthier for you than the popcorn itself.

We Used To Have 307 Kinds Of Corn. Guess How Many Are Left? by BeefyRodentin environment

Actually, it was the ubiquitous monoculture of the Gros Michel banana that almost wiped out the world's supply of bananas, when that variety was wiped out by Panama disease in the '50's. Cavendish bananas are generally considered to be an inferior substitute, but they're what we have left.

helloalicehello on what a woman feels when she get aroused by joazitoin bestof

[–]Dsilkotch 17 points18 points ago

I can give it a shot.

  1. Let's see, 100 years ago was 1912. Actually a time of enormous social upheaval for both men and women. Industrial revolution, massive global unrest, breathtaking prosperity for many and long hours of backbreaking factory work for others. It's not really a good timeframe to choose if your want a stable social example of a woman's place in the world and her relationship to men. But we can assume that women were financially dependent on men, so they basically could choose marriage or prostitution. If they came from a well-off family they might have the option of choosing spinsterhood. But I think that most women married as soon as possible. I'm actually a voracious reader, and I love old books, and I get a sense that most wives, from the poorest working classes to the wealthiest ruling classes, were essentially the property of their husbands. That made the lives of a lot of women a sheer living hell, if their husbands happened to care more about their own convenience than about their wives' happiness. It was generally understood that well-bred women didn't care for sex, so their husbands tended to frequent shadier establishments to get their sexual pleasure met. The wives of the poor were basically raped every night, and neither they nor their husband saw anything unlawful about that. I'm sure there were some loving, happy marriages, but I don't think they were the norm.

  2. I'm a woman, yes. I am absolutely glad that I live in a time and place that allows me to choose my partners and protect myself. That said, this is kind of a crappy time to be a human being. I love sex -- within the safe boundaries of a loving, committed relationship. I have been completely celibate since my marriage ended four years ago, not because I like being celibate but because none of the men around me have any interest in getting into a relationship with a single mother of two. Lots of them are up for casual sex, but that's not my thing. And let me say it again, I am INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL to be living in a time and place that allows me to live a happy, fulfilling life as a single mother rather than having to choose between grasping at any miserable remarriage that's offered to me, or prostitution, or starvation.

  3. I was born into an extremely dysfunctional family, and married into another one. I've seen what happens to people when they do whatever feels good instead of developing wisdom and good judgement. It's not a pretty sight, and it's not tempting to me at all.

But you know what I'd like? A holodeck, like on Star Trek. Hot passionate sex in a safe, no-consequences setting. I would use the fuck out of one of those things.

[–]Dsilkotch 33 points34 points ago

Yes, that's it exactly. You can pressure or drug or bribe some women into having sex with you, but you're not going to get anything like the experience you'd get from a woman who genuinely hungers for you.

Good point. Although women do have more rights and freedoms these days, and those do come bundled with a whole slew of new choices and responsibilities.

helloalicehello on what a woman feels when she get aroused by joazitoin bestof

[–]Dsilkotch 149 points150 points ago

Here's the thing. A woman in these modern times needs to keep her wits about her and use all the good judgement that nature saw fit to bestow upon her. If she does not use her head and make the conscious decision to be responsible for her choices, then sooner or later she will end up roofied or raped or pregnant with an unwanted child or just exploited by a series of selfish men. A woman can't just shut off her sense of personal accountability and assume that others are looking out for her best interests. That will not end well.

So, those moments when she can. When she can just shut off her brain and become the sensual, visceral animal that all women are underneath the protective self-discipline. It's intoxicating, it's primal. We give ourselves over to it like it's an irresistible force of nature. It IS a force of nature. These days sex has been cheapened into something like fast food, and like fast food most of it just isn't very good or satisfying. But when it's good, when it's real...there's just nothing else like it.
