Organizations don’t suffer pathologies; they are intrinsically pathological constructs by ParahSailinin Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]DirtyDan674 1 point2 points ago

The article isn't about making value judgments, but I suspect that the author isn't too fond of sociopaths. He seems to admire their intelligence, but I don't think he'd want to get too close to one.

The author is saying that the sociopaths are brilliant tacticians with a drive for power and lacking in ethical principles. He writes that the sociopaths often promote the over-performing losers to middle management to use as fall guys when their own decisions produce bad results. Like the losers, the sociopaths have no sense of loyalty to the company.

He's not describing the business cycle (as in macroeconomic booms and busts) but the lifecycle of an individual firm.

I like his approach of taking "real world" problems where you often need to collect information or select relevant information for yourself to solve. In my engineering courses, this is the way most problems present themselves. I often need to take my own measurements or look up relevant data, and then use that information to find the solution. It's a more involved process, and also more rewarding IMO. It's much more satisfying to say "I designed this solar water heater to face just the right direction to maximize the amount of sunlight hitting it in my area" than it is to say "I found the side length of a triangle." Being an engineer, I'm biased though. I enjoy math insofar as it helps me understand and manipulate the world. Some mathematicians enjoy it because they consider math to be beautiful in and of itself.

This was interesting to watch, considering James C. Scott's book, "The Art of Not Being Governed." Evidently there are still people who find ways to escape the power of the State and seek to live in egalitarian societies away from civilization.

It sounds like the guy was reviewing a bunch of the material he went over in his International Relations classes. So yes.

How will life support work in 0x10c? Will there be a finite amount of food, water, and oxygen in game? by DirtyDan674in 0x10c

[–]DirtyDan674[S] 7 points8 points ago

I think it'd be cool if food were kept in some part of the player's inventory and slowly ran out. This would be similar to the mechanic with water bottles in Project Zomboid. Actually stopping and eating would be annoying, but I think the challenge of maintaining adequate supplies would make the game more interesting.

Wait what? Is he saying I should come up with a way to rationalize my alleged selfishness?

I never thought I'd be compared to Dick Cheney. This article tells me more about the author than it does about politics.

Sometimes you need to consider this. Most redditors in political subreddits are too emotional and unintelligent to bother arguing with.

What do you think of Per Bylund's theory of property? by Rothbardgroupiein MarketAnarchism

[–]DirtyDan674 0 points1 point ago

In the case of the hunter wanting to kick out the miners, there might be some need to negotiate an agreeable arrangement. Perhaps the miners wear bright orange (a common practice on hunting grounds). Who should pay for such precautions? I'm thinking it depends on who got there first. If the miners used the mountain before the hunter, the it is incumbent on the hunter to buy bright orange vests. If the hunter was there first, then the miners buy their own vests.

I think it's important to note that not all homeopathy is necessarily anti-science. The use of supplements such as Omega-3 oil tablets, for example, came from within the homeopathic community, and there's a fair amount of literature backing it up as a health supplement.

Does skepticism simply mean a denial of conventional wisdom?

I think skepticism requires a willingness to question the conventional wisdom, but not necessarily deny it. Many libertarians like to take on this attitude of "if the government recommends X, then X is unhealthy." That's a stupid way to approach any issue. But I'm not necessarily going to blindly accept the government recommendations as true either.

[–]DirtyDan674 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for posting that. It was a good read. I don't really have any objections to his "property" theory. One issue to work out though might be figuring out what kinds of acts constitute "interference" with the use of a resource. For example, the miner can't simply say he's annoyed by the presence of bikers on the mountainside, and thus exclude them. Perhaps courts handling these kinds of disputes ask for some demonstration that the use of a resource by another interferes in a tangible way (i.e. higher costs or more work) with the use of that resource by the original claimant?
