That's the lip of the pool. It was definitely 12 feet deep with some brackish water at the bottom.

US cyclists save $4.6 billion a year compared to motorists. Though biking and walking account for 12 percent of all trips in the USA, these transportation modes receive only 1.6 percent of federal transportation spending. by marcussantiagoin Frugal

That's because American cities were designed for cars, which makes them inconvenient for any other mode of transportation.

Nobody claims that bicycles can totally replace automobiles (especially for freight or long distance transportation) but I gave up my car about 6 months ago and haven't missed it once. However, I live in Brooklyn which means everything I need for daily living is less than a mile walk/ride away and if I need to go really far I can take public transportation.

The problem is density (something the US gave up on long ago). People shouldn't have to drive 10 miles to buy groceries. I've got everything I need within walking distance.

Anyway, I don't really understand what point you're trying to make. Bikes are definitely an efficient way to get around if your community wasn't designed specifically to prevent it (i.e. designed for cars).

My bike isn't really worth stealing. It's an old Schwinn cruiser. Not worth the effort when there are so many beautiful expensive bikes around.

However, I always keep it in the apartment when I'm home and when I'm out I use a bike lock.

This lock is pretty much the standard here in Brooklyn. Very small which makes it harder to break and it fits in my pocket!

My bike has saved me so much money over the past few years.

I live in NYC and had become accustomed to paying $104 a month for all my transportation needs (subway and bus) but ever since I got a bicycle (which I essentially got for free) I only need to buy a monthly metrocard during the coldest few months of the year.

The rest of the year I have a pay-as-you-go metrocard that I probably spend about $30 a month on. Unless I have to go really far or have no time, I go by bike. For short to medium distances it gets me there much faster than the subway.

On top of the savings, it gets me in shape and I get to see the city like never before.

So I went from spending $1200 a year on transportation to spending maybe $400 and I got in shape!

I remember years ago in my hometown the city hall was holding some kind of conference for disabled people. Well the mayor showed up late, parked over the wheelchair ramp and all the people in wheelchairs were stuck in the lot. :-(

TIL Miles Davis was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he'd done with his life. Straight-faced, Davis replied: "Well, I've changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?" by lankowankoin todayilearned

I think it also has to do with being a musician who likely saw himself as creating music for other black people and for their community. I hear similar sentiments occasionally from modern hip-hop artists. They create music that's about being black and meant to empower their own communities but then it becomes popular with white people and they feel like their music has lost some of its authenticity or purpose, I guess.

1950's style racism probably helped. There's that famous picture of Miles Davis bleeding from the head after a confrontation with some white cop right before a show.

Edit: Here's the picture. Supposedly a cop in NYC wasn't too happy seeing him chatting with a white woman and beat him on the head with his nightstick and took him to jail. Allegedly.

New York Gets The First Underground Park Of The Future by Bemuzedin nyc

[–]Davin900 1 point2 points ago

There are plenty of areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn underserved by the subway system. This space would make a perfect transfer station for a renewed trolley system that could better serve areas like Bed Stuy, the Williamsburg waterfront, Greenpoint, or the east side of Manhattan.

New York Gets The First Underground Park Of The Future by Bemuzedin nyc

[–]Davin900 1 point2 points ago

That underground space was originally a trolly station. I really hope the city doesn't allow it to become a park.

We desperately need improved transit options in this city and restoring trolly service would be much more useful than a claustrophobic underground park.

Interesting. It's not that I don't believe you but every source I've read on this issue seems to have such an ideological slant that I don't know what to believe. The Wikipedia article changes dramatically every time I read it. It once stated quite emphatically that criticisms of the conspiracy theory came primarily from libertarians and other conservatives.

The PBS documentary Taken for a Ride takes the position that it was a conspiracy (perhaps not in LA) nationwide.

I still don't understand why GM et al would feel the need to buy these systems out if they were already in such severe decline. If the national trend was already away from transit, why would GM feel the need to buy out the transit systems?

And this kind of skirts the broader issue of GM's influence on that national trend. They lobbied for the urban freeways, the intercity highways, the mandatory parking, etc. They ran national ad campaigns touting the freedom of the automobile and asking people to lobby for more and bigger highways. It's not as though the trend away from transit happened independent of other factors.

Edit: So to me it seems only rational that a company inherently interested in selling automobiles would want to make its competition (transit) as unappealing and inconvenient as possible. Buses are noisy, they pollute, they're bumpy, and they don't come with any infrastructure making it less obvious when they do disappear.

[–]Davin900 0 points1 point ago

Then why did Edwin J Quinby, who is credited with uncovering the conspiracy, feel the need to write to city leaders across the country warning them of GM's intentions and why did GM then run a smear campaign against Quinby calling him a radical crackpot?

If this was all public knowledge, why did he feel the need to alert cities and why did GM feel the need to smear him?

We had to learn about these and learn how to use the microfiche machines in high school.

One of my fondest school memories was looking up the moon landing cover of the local newspaper and then looking up the day I was born.

Have you ever actually used an iPhone 4?

The attenuation issue was/is fairly minor. When I squeeze mine quite hard there it loses a bar or two but has never caused a dropped call or anything remotely inconvenient. At least half my friends have the iPhone 4 as well and none have ever had an issue.

I believe this is only an issue with iOS 5. You should be able to upgrade to 4.2.1 no problem. But I would go up to iOS 5 if I were you. So much better.
